Public Eye

Crowd insights with a human touch!

Public Eye is the world’s first privacy-by design crowd monitoring system, that helps municipal innovators gain actionable insights about busy inner-city hot spots.

Creating livable cities with data-driven insightS

The recent explosion of intelligent cameras into the market place is raising many privacy concerns for the public and managers alike.  Since it’s privacy by design, PublicEye doesn’t store any images or videos. The system only shares the predicted total of the people it detects

Our system accurately counts the number people at any event or location

Check & share real time busyness via our easy use data-vis dashboard

Stay in control of specific speeds and directions of people in busy places

No Hardware Required

The system can connect to any RTSP feed used by any standard camera system or existing infrastructure. Public Eye is subscription based so you can add as many feeds as you want and view them all in one place via the dashboard

How does it work?

Public Eye is an algorithm to count the size, density, direction, speed of crowds in public space. This open source software is freely available for any municipal innovator who is interested in using existing city cameras to collect, store, process and share real-time data of crowds in public space(s). The algorithms used have been independently verified to outperform commercial systems. Government workers can create datasets from camera streams, train neural networks and deploy the trained networks to cameras.

Responsible Urban Technology

PRIVACY BY DESIGN

Public Eye adheres to the values and principles of the TADA Manifesto which is signed by 89 organizations and 563 citizens in the Netherlands.

The Responsible Sensing Toolkit enables municipalities, organizations and communities to engage in an effective process to develop and implement ethical, open and effective crowd monitoring solutions for public spaces.

a word from our project partners

Public Eye is a privacy-compliant method to monitor crowdedness. By collecting data about the number of pedestrians, it is possible to create insights and forecast how the crowd will move. So, operational staff can take measures, such as informing the crowd via a digital sign. Also, citizens are able to estimate what the best route is for themselves. This is one of the solutions that contributes to the city to stay comfortable, reachable and safe.

“The Johan Cruijff ArenA sees enormous added value in the use of the crowd monitoring data for operations at large-scale events in the ArenApoort area. This data provides insight into what is used in the preparation and coordination at the front of the events, such as the operational deployment of personnel and equipment”

Marineterrein - Color@2x.png
“Located in the heart of the city, Marineterrein Amsterdam is the place where businesses, institutions, and citizens conduct experiments in the field of learning, working and living. The crowd insights monitor project is a great example of how we gradually develop the test area into an urban, futureproof city-district. Again and again we set the bar for the city, country and the world as a whole. “
